Detailed Itinerary
We depart your Marrakech Riad or hotel at 08:00 AM sharp. Our private 4×4 climbs into the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass ($2,260\text{ meters}$), highlighting spectacular views of remote Berber settlements.
Our destination is the ancient UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, where we halt for a guided historic walk and lunch. In the afternoon, we follow the winding path of the Draa Valley, passing old fortresses like Kasbah Tamnougalt. We settle into the desert gateway city of Zagora for our first night, enjoying dinner at a local Kasbah-style hotel.
Driving Distance: Approx. 350 km.
Accommodations: Kasbah Hotel/Riad in Zagora.
Meals: Dinner included.
Following breakfast, we make a short journey south to Tamegroute to step into one of North Africa’s oldest Quranic libraries and observe artisans forming its famous green pottery.
We press onward to the frontier outpost of M’hamid El Ghizlane, where the paved asphalt ends. Here, our vehicle transitions onto rough desert trails, navigating roughly 60 km of off-road terrain. As the massive silhouettes of the Erg Chegaga dunes emerge on the horizon, you will shift to a camel caravan to catch the sunset across the open ridges. Spend the evening inside a traditional bivouac desert camp, complete with local nomad drumming around a central campfire.
Driving Distance: Approx. 160 km (including heavy off-road terrain).
Accommodations: Private desert tent (Standard or Luxury options available).
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included.
We rise early to capture the sun emerging over the vast Saharan plain. After an authentic desert breakfast, we load back into our 4×4 for another exhilarating 90 km of off-road transit.
We will cross the vast, flat expanse of Lake Iriki (a dried-up salt flats safari plateau) and look for ancient marine fossils along the desert floor. Rejoining the paved highway at Foum Zguid, we pass through Taznakht, a village famous for its hand-woven Berber carpets. We make our final crossing back through the High Atlas passes, dropping you back at your Marrakech accommodation by approximately 06:30 PM.
Driving Distance: Approx. 430 km (mixed off-road and highway driving).
Meals: Breakfast included.

Frequently Asked Questions (Erg Chegaga Tour)
What is the difference between Erg Chegaga and Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)?
Merzouga features highly concentrated, incredibly tall orange sand dunes that are easily accessible via paved roads, meaning it sees more tourist traffic. Erg Chegaga is much more remote, expansive, and wild. It requires hours of rough off-road 4×4 driving to access. It is the preferred choice for adventurers seeking total isolation, vast dune fields, and a traditional wilderness experience away from crowds.
Is this tour rough or physically demanding?
Yes, please be prepared for a real expedition. Accessing Erg Chegaga requires driving over unpaved desert tracks, washboards, and sand dunes. While highly exciting, the drive is bumpy and involves an intensive final day of travel to return to Marrakech. If you have severe back issues or motion sickness, you may want to look into our smoother, fully-paved 3-Day Merzouga Tour.
Do your vehicles have proper safety gear for the deep desert?
Absolutely. Because we maintain our own fleet and coordinate with a large team of 120 staff across Morocco, all of our 4×4 vehicles are heavily serviced, equipped for deep desert tracks, and managed by veteran drivers who know the Saharan routes perfectly.
Can the camp accommodate vegetarian or gluten-free diets?
Yes, our local camp teams are highly experienced with international travelers. Whether you require vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free meals, our driver will coordinate with the camp kitchen in advance to ensure your dinner and breakfast are prepared safely.
