Durations

2 Days/ 1 Nights

If you are staying in the Fes Medina and want to experience Morocco’s famous “Blue Pearl” along with the region’s deepest history, this 2-day getaway perfectly balances nature and heritage. You will enjoy a scenic private drive through the green Rif Mountains and have a relaxed evening and morning to wander Chefchaouen’s photogenic blue alleys at your own pace. On your return journey to Fes, we transform the drive into a journey through time, stopping to explore the UNESCO-protected Roman ruins of Volubilis and the grand 17th-century walls of the Imperial City of Meknes.

Tour Highlights

  • The Blue Pearl at Twilight: Experience the peaceful atmosphere of Plaza Uta el-Hammam in the evening when the Medina comes alive with locals and the day-trippers have left.

  • Scenic Rif Mountain Drive: Travel through olive groves, rolling green hills, and dramatic mountain passes.

  • Ancient Rome in Africa: Walk among the towering columns and incredibly preserved floor mosaics of Volubilis, Morocco’s most important archaeological site.

  • The Versailles of Morocco: Marvel at the monumental Bab Mansour gate and the massive granaries of Meknes, the imperial capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail.

  • Authentic Accommodation: Sleep in a beautifully decorated traditional Riad right in the heart of Chefchaouen’s blue alleys.

Detailed Itinerary

Your private driver will pick you up directly from your Fes Riad or hotel after breakfast. We leave the busy imperial city behind and drive north into the fertile plains, passing the Sidi Abdeljalil dam and the agricultural town of Ouezzane. As we climb into the Rif Mountains, the scenery transforms into lush, green slopes.

By early afternoon, we arrive in Chefchaouen. After checking into your Riad, the rest of the day is yours. You can safely wander the maze of blue-painted streets, shop for unique woven blankets and local artisan goods, and visit the 15th-century Kasbah in the main square. In the late afternoon, we highly recommend the 20-minute walk up to the Spanish Mosque for a spectacular sunset view over the town.

  • Driving Time: About 3.5 to 4 hours

  • Accommodations: Charming blue-styled Riad in the Chefchaouen Medina

  • Meals: None (plenty of great local cafes available)

Wake up to the fresh mountain air and enjoy a traditional Moroccan breakfast on your Riad’s rooftop terrace. Take a final morning stroll through the empty blue streets for perfect, uninterrupted photography before we meet your driver.

We depart the Rif Mountains and head south toward the foothills of the Middle Atlas. Our first major stop is Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring some of the best-preserved Roman mosaics in North Africa. Take your time wandering through the grand arches, basilicas, and ancient villas.

A short drive then brings us to the Imperial City of Meknes. Here, we will stop to admire Bab Mansour, widely considered the most beautiful, intricately tiled gate in all of Morocco, and explore the massive royal granaries and stables of Heri es-Souani. In the late afternoon, we make the final 45-minute highway drive back to Fes, dropping you off at your accommodation to conclude the tour.

  • Driving Time: About 4.5 to 5 hours total

  • Meals: Breakfast included

Frequently Asked Questions

Chefchaouen is very small, safe, and easy to navigate on your own, so most travelers just wander freely. For Volubilis, the ruins are vast. While you can explore them independently, hiring a local historian right at the entrance gate is highly recommended if you want to understand the rich history behind the mosaics and Roman architecture.

Yes! Meknes is the perfect midway point for a relaxed Moroccan lunch. You can enjoy a meal near the famous Lahdim Square (often compared to a smaller version of Marrakech’s Jemaa el-Fnaa) overlooking the Medina walls.

Absolutely. If you have an evening departure from Fes-Saïss Airport, we can bypass the Fes Medina entirely and drop you directly at the departure terminal.
